Scoping Checklist

Data points to collect before quoting Cortex XSOAR — and before deciding XSOAR vs AgentiX.

Active User Count — Number of humans who will log into the tenant — XSOAR licensing is active-user based. Separate production from development tenant users (dev has no user limit).
Deployment Model & Train — XSOAR 8 Cloud (SaaS, currently 8.15) or on-premises (currently 8.13, May 22 2026). Confirm which train the customer will run and any version-pinning requirement.
On-Prem to SaaS Migration Eligibility — Single-tenant on-prem customers migrate to XSOAR 8 Cloud at no charge. Confirm tenancy, custom integrations and any air-gap constraint that blocks it.
Integration Inventory — Which of the 1,000+ content-pack integrations are needed, which are custom-built, and which vendors are being replaced. Fewer than 3–5 automated integrations rarely clears ROI.
Use Case and Playbook Count — Named automation use cases, expected incident volume per use case, and how many existing playbooks must be ported.
Multi-Tenancy / MSSP Requirement — Whether multi-tenant deployment is needed — separate commercial track, and pricing for XSOAR 8 Cloud multi-tenant is still to be announced.
Threat Intel Management Scope — TIM feeds, indicator volume and whether the customer instead needs Cortex XTI, which ships across XSIAM 3.6, XDR 5.2 and AgentiX 1.4.
AgentiX Overlap Decision — Palo Alto positions AgentiX as the natural evolution of SOAR. Capture whether the account should buy XSOAR standalone, AgentiX (Enterprise: 4 users / 800 compute units per year; Base: 2 users / 400 CU per year), or both.
XSIAM Convergence Path — Whether XSIAM Enterprise or Premium is in the 12-month plan — XSIAM includes XSOAR automation natively and existing playbooks carry over.
Compliance and Hosting Constraints — FedRAMP or data-residency requirements. Note that FedRAMP Moderate and High are documented for AgentiX; verify current XSOAR authorization status before committing.

Discovery Questions

Questions to uncover SOAR gaps and qualify the XSOAR or XSIAM automation opportunity.

01 What percentage of your SOC analyst time is spent on repetitive, manual triage tasks vs. actual investigation and threat hunting?
02 Do you have a SOAR platform today? If yes — Splunk SOAR, ServiceNow SecOps, or another? When does that contract renew?
03 How many playbooks do you currently have in production? How long does it take to build and maintain them?
04 When a major incident happens, how do your SOC analysts collaborate — Slack, email, phone calls? Is there a dedicated incident workspace?
05 Are you operationalizing your threat intelligence feeds, or are they feeds that analysts check manually? How are IOCs being disseminated to your SIEM and firewall?
06 Are you using Cortex XSIAM today? If yes, are you aware that XSOAR automation is included natively — you may not need a standalone XSOAR license?
07 Do you provide managed security services to multiple clients? How are you managing separate SOC workflows and data isolation across customers?
08 If you're evaluating XSIAM as a SIEM replacement, has anyone discussed that XSOAR automation would be included — eliminating a separate line-item cost?

Key capabilities

Overview

What is Cortex XSOAR?

Cortex XSOAR (formerly Demisto, acquired 2019) is PANW's Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response (SOAR) platform—the "connective tissue" of the PANW security operations portfolio. With 1,000+ out-of-the-box integrations spanning SIEM, EDR, firewalls, ticketing, TI feeds, cloud, and identity, XSOAR is the de facto automation layer for multi-vendor SOC environments.

In 2026, XSOAR ranks as the #1 SOAR platform in multiple analyst and practitioner rankings for large enterprise SOCs. Available as cloud SaaS (XSOAR 8 Cloud) or on-premises; the cloud version is the strategic future direction and PANW is migrating on-prem customers to SaaS at no charge for single-tenant deployments.

Current releases: XSOAR 8.13 on-premises, released May 22, 2026. The SaaS train runs ahead of on-prem and is at 8.15. Quote and scope against the train the customer will actually run.

Roadmap positioning: Palo Alto Networks positions Cortex AgentiX as “the natural evolution of our market-leading SOAR platform”. XSOAR is still sold standalone and is not end-of-sale — but expect the AgentiX question in every renewal. Scope both: XSOAR for deterministic playbook automation across a multi-vendor stack, AgentiX for agentic, LLM-driven SOC work licensed per user per year.
Best-fit: Organizations with mature SOCs (10+ analysts), high alert volumes, and multi-vendor security stacks. Minimum 3–5 integrations to automate before ROI becomes clear. MSSPs are a particularly high-value buyer for multi-tenant deployment.

Platform Capabilities

Core Capabilities

Playbook automation, real-time collaboration, and centralized threat intelligence — all in one platform.

Visual Playbook Automation
Drag-and-drop, code-optional playbook editor. Prebuilt catalog for phishing response, ransomware containment, vulnerability response, and cloud security incidents. Human-in-the-loop task gates for actions requiring approval.
1,000+ Integrations
Bi-directional integration with every major security product — SIEMs, EDR, firewalls, ITSM (ServiceNow, Jira), TI feeds (Recorded Future, Mandiant), cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP), identity (Okta, AD), and more.
War Room
Real-time, incident-specific collaboration environment where analysts, hunters, and responders work together with all incident data, playbook steps, indicators, and artifacts in one space. Replaces Slack/email coordination during major incidents.
Incident Management
Structured incident lifecycle from ingestion through containment and closure. Customizable incident types, fields, and layouts by SOC workflow. SLA tracking and analyst workload balancing built in.
Threat Intelligence Management (TIM)
Centralized TI aggregation, scoring, correlation, and dissemination. IOC deduplication, enrichment automation, feed management, and relationship mapping. Integrated with 100+ TI feeds including Unit 42 intelligence.
MSSP Multi-Tenancy
Multi-tenant deployments for MSSPs and enterprises with distinct business units. Each tenant maintains data isolation. Optiv can deliver XSOAR to multiple clients from one platform at scale.
XSOAR Marketplace
Content library of integration packs, playbooks, incident types, and scripts — contributed by PANW, partners, and the community. Continuously updated; all content packs are free.
Unit 42 TI Content Pack
The consolidated Unit 42 TI content pack (introduced in 8.12, carried forward in 8.13 on-prem and 8.15 SaaS) replaces deprecated integrations. Enriches all incidents and indicators with Unit 42 research and IOCs from active IR engagements globally.

Competitors

Win Strategy

Key Differentiators vs. Competition

Differentiator vs. Splunk SOAR vs. Microsoft Sentinel vs. IBM QRadar SOAR vs. Swimlane/Tines
Integration depth 300+ integrations, 2,800 actions — narrower than XSOAR's 1,000+ Azure Logic Apps-based; Microsoft-ecosystem oriented Strong in IBM stack; narrower third-party coverage Pure automation; limited security-specific content
War Room Basic collaboration; no dedicated War Room workspace No comparable collaboration environment Basic collaboration features No War Room equivalent
PANW native integration Requires connector; no PANW native advantage Microsoft-native only IBM-native only Connector-only model
TIM capability Relies on Splunk ES for TI; not natively integrated in SOAR Requires Microsoft TI connectors; separate workbench QRadar TI is a separate product No native TIM capability
MSSP multi-tenancy Available in Splunk SOAR Enterprise Limited; workspace-per-tenant model Available in QRadar Limited MSSP support
Splunk displacement: A growing opportunity as Splunk customers evaluate costs post-Cisco acquisition. XSOAR offers playbook translation, integration re-mapping, and parallel-run migration services. Optiv PS can deliver this end-to-end.

Details

Optiv Opportunity

MSSP Multi-Tenant Deployment

XSOAR supports multi-tenant deployments for MSSPs — each tenant maintains data isolation with Optiv managing the shared platform infrastructure. This enables Optiv to deliver a branded managed SOAR service to dozens of clients simultaneously from one XSOAR instance.

Managed SOAR Service

Optiv manages the XSOAR platform and playbook library on behalf of customers — ongoing playbook maintenance, integration updates, SOC metrics reporting. Recurring revenue stream.

SOAR Implementation & PS

XSOAR deployment, integration buildout, and custom playbook development for customer-specific response procedures. Typically 6–16 week engagement; high-value PS opportunity.

IR Playbook Standardization

Formalize and automate customer IR runbooks — phishing response, ransomware, insider threat, cloud compromise — aligned to NIST CSF or MITRE D3FEND. Compliance-driven demand.

Platform Evolution

Migration: XSOAR to XSIAM

Customers on standalone XSOAR should be evaluated for the XSIAM upgrade — SOAR is natively included in XSIAM, eliminating a separate license.

1
Evaluate the Gap
Assess what the customer has today: standalone XSOAR, SIEM from a different vendor (Splunk, QRadar, Sentinel), and any XDR. Map what they'd gain from XSIAM vs. their current stack and calculate TCO delta.
2
Free SaaS Migration (Single-Tenant)
PANW offers free migration from on-premises XSOAR to XSOAR 8 Cloud for single-tenant deployments. This is a low-risk conversation starter — modernize the platform at no additional cost as a first step.
3
Add XSIAM Around XSOAR
XSIAM includes XSOAR automation natively. Customers on XSOAR 8 Cloud who add XSIAM Enterprise gain full NG-SIEM, XDR, ASM, and cloud detection while their XSOAR playbooks continue running — no rework.
4
SIEM Displacement Unlock
Once XSIAM is in place, the Splunk or QRadar SIEM becomes redundant. This is the highest-value migration — Optiv can manage the SIEM decommission, XSIAM onboarding, data source migration, and analyst retraining.
XSIAM 3.1 Automation Rules: Replaces XSOAR playbook triggers with more flexible Automation Rules that trigger both full playbooks and single Quick Actions (isolate endpoint, block IP, etc.). Customers on XSIAM get this natively — no standalone XSOAR license needed.

Platform Synergy

PANW Ecosystem Integration

Cortex XDR XSOAR triggers XDR response actions (endpoint isolation, process kill, file quarantine) via native integration. XDR alerts flow into XSOAR as incidents for automated triage and response playbooks.
Cortex XSIAM XSIAM includes XSOAR automation natively. Customers on XSIAM use XSOAR automation without a separate license. XSIAM 3.1 introduced Automation Rules that extend beyond traditional playbook triggers.
Cortex Xpanse Xpanse ASM alerts trigger XSOAR playbooks for investigation, owner notification, service remediation, and validation re-scanning. Full Cortex ASM pack available in Marketplace.
PANW NGFW / Panorama XSOAR can push firewall policy changes — block IPs, quarantine zones, update External Dynamic Lists — as automated response actions. Native integration with no additional connector cost.
ServiceNow / Jira / Slack XSOAR integrates with ticketing and communication platforms for automated ticket creation, SOC notifications, and escalation workflows from security incidents.
